Beer You Go Road Trip 003: Lazy Magnolia, Mississippi's Oldest Brewery

We weren't planning on making a stop at Lazy Magnolia, Mississippi's oldest package brewery, until we were about an hour and a half in to our drive from Mobile, AL (Serda Brewing) to New Orleans, LA (Urban South Brewery). Conveniently located right off of I-10 in Kiln, MS it is a must stop for anyone traveling through the Deep South, and was too convenient for us not to stop.

We were able to easily park the RV out front and take our dogs for a walk to get some energy out before entering. We were met with a warm southern hospitality from the people and their mascot, Fred (recently adopted by the owners of the brewery). Dog friendly breweries are always nice stops on the road.

Lazy Magnolia definitely has a back porch vibe to it. When you're drinking a beer there you feel more like you are at someone's house than at a brewery that is cranking out enough Southern Pecan beer for all of the Southeast.

After talking with them and getting a taste for all that they had on tap we decided our favorites were the Sweet Potato Stout and the Southern Pecan (pictured below).

Lazy Magnolia is known for being the first brewery in Mississippi since prohibition was enacted in 1907 and of course for their Southern Pecan, the first beer in the world, to their knowledge, brewed with whole roasted pecans. According to their website,

"The pecans are used just like grain and provide a nutty characteristic and a delightful depth to the flavor profile. This beer is very lightly hopped to allow the malty, caramel, and nutty flavors shine through. The color is dark mahogany. Southern Pecan won a Bronze Medal in the 2006 World Beer Cup in the Specialty Beer category."

Another thing we love about Lazy Magnolia is how they are supporting local artists. At the brewery you can pick up a 20oz clay mug created by a local artist, Steve Barney, “The Mad Potter”. We picked up one of these mugs and love the look and feel. If you join the Porch Pal membership at the brewery you can get 20oz pours in the mug for the price of a pint in the taproom and have access to exclusive Porch Pal brews on a regular basis (something we would definitely take part in if we were local).

If you're looking for a tasty stop while traveling on I-10, want to meet some friendly people and animals or just want to try the first beer in the world brewed with whole roasted pecans Lazy Magnolia is our recommendation.
